Illuminating Innovation: Synchrotron Science, Quantum Frontiers, and Africa’s Scientific Future
Mai 27 @ 13:00 - 14:30
As part of the UNESCO–IUPAP Physics for Society International Colloquium series, this special session explores the transformative role of synchrotron facilities in advancing quantum science, materials research, and regional cooperation. Featuring leading voices from SESAME, the African Light Source Foundation, and global research infrastructures, the event will highlight how access to synchrotron technology can accelerate Africa’s scientific future, strengthen international collaboration, and support inclusive innovation.
Organized under the umbrellas of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD) and the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), this session aims to explore the role of synchrotron light sources as enablers of cutting-edge research in quantum science and technology (QST). It will spotlight how these large-scale research infrastructures drive innovation in materials science, clean energy, nanotechnology, and biomedical imaging. They will also serve as strategic platforms for international cooperation and scientific capacity-building.
The event seeks to raise awareness of synchrotrons as powerful tools for advancing the global quantum agenda and to highlight the synergistic relationship between synchrotron research and the emerging QST ecosystem. It will encourage reflection on how African Member States can leverage science diplomacy and international partnerships to shape a sustainable, inclusive research future.
